Wolf Hunting in Ontario
by: Jerry Durst
Minnesota Adventuring Magazine: January 23, 2003
Dale Elijan and I had just returned form a wolf hunt in Ontario and I
mentioned to my wife, Arlene, that I should write a story for the Minnesota
Adventuring. The next thing I know there's a message on my phone from Warren
Kapsner about a story I'd said I would provide .
Timing is essential and it couldn't have been better.
This all started in December 2000, January 2001. We booked 3-4 days with
Peter Martin in Kapuskasing Ontario. Kapriver Retrievers and Outfitters. We
arrived Dec 27th hunter Dec. 28th to Jan 1st.
2001. We settled in and were made to feel as though we'd always been a part
of the family. It just clicked! Peter's wife Terry is no small part of this
operation. She prepares the wonderful meals that are a most enjoyable and
memorable part of the adventure. We hunted our allotted days and only saw one
wolf and that had a 25-06 hole in it.
Well along comes January 2002...and off we go again. We hunted the 10th
to the 13th. The first morning Marc pushed a big black wolf out to
Dale. I think Dale got so excited that his accuracy was a bit off. We now, at
least , had seen a wolf. I was about 300 plus yards
away and the critter was coming my way on the frozen river. I laid down and decided not to shoot as he was moving toward
me. I just said "keep coming" MISTAKE - he was looking for a place
to leave the river, which he found and was gone in two jumps.
The next day we checked baits and found another potential spot...we set up
and Marc started a push. The wolf was coming thru the timber so the wait was
on. After what seemed to be about an hour, I caught a movement to my left, I
froze and didn't blink...out comes a wolf about 55-60 yards and commits to
crossing the trail. She never broke stride, a fast dog trot, and I realized
she had not seen me. I flicked my safety off - raised my 7mm ultra mag. I had
made just for this hunt. I put the cross hair on her front shoulder and
pulled ahead and let her trot back into my sights. As her shoulder passed I
pulled the trigger. She never heard the shot. The wolf nosed dived into the
snow and never even quivered. I sat there after jacking a round into the
chamber and watched her just to make sure. I had my wolf
!!
Dale had a chance at another wolf and was unsuccessful and I had another
chance at one crossing a frozen river at about 200 yards on a run and that
proved to be a test at which I failed.
All in all we saw 5 wolves in four days. We should have had at least 3 of
them but that's hunting.
I've got to end this story with a few comments about Peter Martin and Marc.
They know how to hunt wolves.. They know their areas
and they sense where to place the shooters. We've learned a lot about wolves
from thin in a short time . We're ready for next
year.
I any one is interested in a winter vacation with action....Kapriver
Retrievers and Outfitters. Just call Dale or myself.
